Our Mission
Root of Wonder is an innovative design-forward production company, founded in the belief that cultivating diverse offerings from local, national, and global perspectives creates inspiring theatre that opens audiences to the greatest change and gets to the heart of what makes us human. We believe that wonder is the root of joy, and that joy creates an opening for growth, learning, and entertainment. As humans, we should all strive to see the world with more wonderment. As theatre makers, it is our duty to create the conditions for wonder to grow.
Root of Wonder was founded by Max Sarkowsky in January of 2021. Our definition of design-forward theatre has three pillars of influence: Performance Design, Puppetry, and Clowning. Each of these pillars contributes a different essence of wonder to our theatre creations. Performance Design is the visual and sonic home that stories live within. Neither story nor design is more important than the other, they work together to create something greater. Puppetry is the heart of design-forward theatre. The characters themselves are designed and then brought to life through breath. The wonder of seeing a life created in front of you on stage is one of the most powerful theatrical experiences, and therefore the central pillar of this company. Finally, Clowning may seem like a departure from design-forward theatre, but we believe the eccentric principles of clowning remind us to stay true to the root of what makes theatre great: Being interested. Interested in our work, in creativity, in the world around us, in our audiences, in the moment. By staying present, and caring deeply outside of ourselves, the wonder flourishes.
These three disciplines are central to our ideology at Root of Wonder, lending themselves to projects within and far beyond their traditional boundaries.
